To Please congress agreed to admit california as a free tate and abolish the slave trade in wahington,d.c.
To please th esouth,congress would let territories decide i they were going to be slave or free,and they would pass a stronger law to help slaveholders recapture runaway slaves- Fugitive Slave Law. Failed to hold the Union together and angered Northeners.

Kansas-Nebraska Act

Pro slavery and Anti-slavert people began flooding into kansa and nebraske so they could force the state to become what they wanted it to be.

The Case Of Dred Scott

Dred Scott sued for his freedom after briefly living with his owner on free soil in the north.
Ruling for the judges: Slaves were not citizens,so they could not bring suit in court.Slaves wereproperty.
The Missouri Compromise ,which had banned slavery,was unconstitutional.
Southeners were overjoyed!!!
Northeners were upset and bean joining the Republican Party in droves.

Lincoln-Douglas Debates

Lincoln and Douglas were running for Senator in Illinois.lincolns position=Slavery was wrong but protected by the Constitution.
Lincoln lost the election,but became nationally famous!

Raid On Harpers Ferry

John Brown and followers seized the federal aresenal at Harpers Ferry ,killing 4 people.
Goal=stir up a slave revolt in virginia and end slavery.it didnt work.

Linoln notified Davis (president of the Confederate States Of America) that he was sending supplies to the fort.
South opened fire on April 12,1861 and th eUnion forces being -supplied had to surrender.
