  • The Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise
    As tensions grew between the north and the south, this act was made to settle what states were free or slave. A line was drawn, from the bottom of Missouri down was slave while the rest was free.
  • Wilmont Proviso

    Wilmont Proviso
    The idea of popular sovereignty was created. This idea was that each state would vote to see whether it was a free or a slave state. This way the people of the state got to decide what kind of state they lived in.
  • The California Gold Rush

    The California Gold Rush
    Gold was found in California. People from the east flood to California. As it became clear that California would become a state it scared the southerners because it looked like CA would become a free state and this would upset the balance.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    This compromise made it so California became a free state, the land won from mexico would be decided by popular sovereignty. Slave auctions were also banned in Washington DC. It also made it so Texas could not advocate for slavery and the north promised that the fugitive slave act would be enforced.

    As Kansas became a state both pro-slavery and anti-slavery people flooded it. Both pro-slave and anti-slave cities were built. Tensions grew and both sides started to kill each other.

    This act allowed the states to become slave or free depending on popular sovereignty. People rushed to both states from both side of the conflict to vote for their side. This grew tensions dramatically

    John Brown's Raid
    John Brown had attempted a raid on a federal armory. Thinking that slaves from around the area would come and fight for their freedom, but instead no slaves came. The only people to show up were Robert E. Lee and his troops to capture Brown.

    South Carolina withdraws from the union to create their own country: the confederacy. Over the next 6 weeks many other states follow and create the confederate states of america.

    All the seceded state officially form the confederate states of america as an independent republic. The guaranteed slavery, banned tariffs, and limited presidency for 6 year term.

    At first the north and south thought the war would be easy and quick. The battle of bull run was supposed to be so minor that people set up a picnic to watch. Instead it was a massacre

    Battle of Shiloh
    The confederates launch a surprise attack on Grant. It was a horrific battle. More people died than the entire american revolution and the mexican-american war combined at it was not even the bloodiest war yet.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Battle of Antietam
    The Battle of Antietam was the most horrific battle in the Civil War. Robert E. Lee pushed into the north and killed the northerners. Lee killed 22,000 men in one day and was so horrified with himself he retreated.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    After the Battle of Antietam Lincoln knew he had to free the slaves. He made a proclamation that allowed all enslaved men to become free forever. This quickly changed to dynamic of the war.

    Vicksburg was the last standing confederate base. The union attacked and but it under siege. The union cut off all supplies for the base and continuously bombed the base until the confederates gave up
  • Sherman's March

    Sherman burned a path 60 mile long through the south on his way to atlanta. He burned through mills, railroads, and even factories. He wanted to send a message to the confederates about how real this war was
  • The Freedman's Bureau

    The Freedman's Bureau
    After the war, when reconstruction began, an organization called the Freedman's Bureau was created. This helped previous slaves get jobs, negotiate labor hours, and get a better education.
  • Lincoln's Assassination

    Lincoln's Assassination
    Lincoln was killed in Ford's Theater. Lincoln had gone escorted. Booth, the murderer, timed the shot of his gun with the laughter coming from a particular joke in the play. Lincoln died the very next day.

    The Ku Klux Klan was formed to harass African Americans and rebel against white republicans and carpetbaggers. The KKK is made up of former confederate generals and soldiers. A law passed to ban the KKK and many were arrested but very little served jail time.

    The Military Reconstruction Act made it so that the South was split into 5 military districts. In order to become a district they had to rejoin the union by passing the 14th amendment which made it so all U.S. born are now citizens.
  • The 15th Amendment

    The 15th Amendment
    Once Ulysses S. Grant became president, the 15th amendment was passed. This allowed all African Americans the right to vote. This completely flipped the southerners society.
