Civil War starts
Civil War begins and William Sherman returns to the Union Military. -
Zouaves Form
A group of military form and are deployed from Fort Schuyler, by the New York Harbor. Colonel Abram Duryée was appointed as the commander of the regiment. Most soldiers are tall and educated. -
Zouaves: Change in Leadership
Duryee is given a promotion and so Gouverneur Kemble Warren took over command of the regiment. He continuously drills the soldiers until (when they are called to join the Army of the Potomac) they are seen as "the most disiplined and soldierly regiment in the army." -
Promotion
Succeeded his commanding officer, he is now a General. but soon sufferes a mental breakdown. -
Back in Action
Sherman is put under the command of Ulysses S. Grant and is with him during Shiloh. -
Vicksburg
Sherman was under Grant at Vicksburg, after to failed attemts of attacking the Confederates, the Union starves them out. -
Zouaves: 2nd Change in Leadership
Eventually, the regiment fell under the control of General John Pope. At the Second Battle for Bull Run, the unit suffered huge casualties and lost all but one of their color guard. -
Promotion (again)
Grant becomes the commander of the Union Army, he promotes Sherman to the Commander of the Army of Tennessee. -
Promotion
Sherman is promoted to Major General because of his march to the sea. -
Begining of Shermans March to the Sea
Sherman begins his 285-mile march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia. They ran a "torched earth" campaign burning crops, killing livestock, and putting down rebels on the way. attempting to make the Southerners to abandon the Confederate cause. -
Promotion
Sherman is promoted to Lieutenant General.
