Crimean War
When William Hall was a teenager, he sighned up to become a merchant marine as a deck hand on the HMS Rodey and enlisted in the Royal Navy but he deserted and re- listed that same year, this time on the HMS Shannon. William Hall became a marine and in the Crimean War earned two medals, where one from Britain and one from Turkey. -

William Hall then joined the crew of HMS Shannon as captain of the Foretop. It was his service with the Shannon that led to the Victoria Cross.
