William Golding's birth
Golding was born in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England. He was born in a 14th century house, in which he grew up in with his parents. His mom, Mildred, was a women's suffrage activist, and his father, Alex was a schoolmaster. -
Golding Publishes His First Book
A year before Golding graduated from Brasenose College at Oxford University, he published his first book, Poems. This book was laregly overlooked by critics. -
Golding's First Profession
When Goulding graduted, he taught english and philosophy at Bishop Wordsworth's School in Salisburg. While teaching, Golding was inspired to write Lord of the Flies. -
Joining the Military
In 1940, Golding joined the Royal Navy and fought in WWII. During his service, he developed his love for sailing and the sea. Golding fought for battleships at the sinking of Bismarck, and was also placed in command at the rocket launching. -
Golding's End
Golding died in 1993 due to a heart attack in Perranarworthal, Cornwall. He spent his last few years living with his wife Ann Brookfield. When Golding passed away, his completed manuscript of The Double Tongue was published.
