    He was born on September 19, 1911 in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England. He lived next to a graveyard with his mother Mildred who fought for women's rights. His father, Alec was also a school teacher.

    In 1930 Golding attended college at Brasenose College at Oxford. After 2 years of studying science he switched to literature and found his true passion. In 1935 he graduated and became a teacher

    Following in his father's footsteps, Golding began teaching in 1935 at Bishop Wordsworth's School. He taught English and Philosophy until 1940 when he took a small break.

    Golding in the Royal Navy

    Golding temporarily decided to
    take a break from teaching and to join the Royal Navy to fight in World War II. He fought off battleships and and planes. His experience in war proved to be good material for his book. After WW II ended in 1945, Golding went back to teaching.

    Golding was a determined writer and after many trials and errors in 1954, Golding released his first novel "Lord of the Flies." It revealed the savage side in humans and when the restraints of society are let loose. It was a big hit and Golding's big break. It set an example for Golding's future writing, when he exp[loresw the between good and evil.

    Golding's Final Achievements and Death

    Golding retired from teaching in 1963. His novel was adapted into a movie and in 1983 won a Noble Peace Prize for Literature. He was even knighted by Queen Elizabeth herself in 1988. Golding died of a heart attack in 1993 in Perranarworthal, Cornwall, a manuscript of "The Double Tongue" was released.
