William Golding was born on September 19, 1911 in Saint Columb Minor. His mother was a women's right to vote advocate and his father was a schoolmaster. -
Childhood
William tried and failed to write a novel causing him to be very stressed. This resulted in treating his classmates very badly and bullied them. (Date stated is unofficial however it was in 1923) -
College
William graduated Brasenose College at Oxford University having changed his studies to English Literature in his third year, against his father's wish to become a scientists. Career
From 1935-1939, William experimented with many jobs,such as a producer, writer,teacher, and actor. According to him, theater was what influenced his soon to be novels however, him teaching irresponsible young boys is what inspired "Lord Of The Flies". (Date unspecific except for the year) -
World War II
When WWII occurred, William spent 6 years in the Royal Navy. He formed a bond with the ocean and grew a love for sailing. His experience while fighting in the war was also said to certainly affect his writing.Afterwards he went back to teaching and writing.(Date is not accurate except for year) -
Lord Of The Flies
On September 17,1954 , Golding's first novel, "Lord Of The Flies" was published after 21 previous rejections. This novel went on to be considered a classic and was made into a film shortly after Golding retired from teaching in 1963. -
