Precursors to Wheels
Structures similar to wheels were found in the Middle East, however these were primitive and difficult to turn. These are known as "tournettes". -
4000 BCE
The First Wheel
The first wheel was discovered in modern-day Iraq and dates back to around 4000 BCE -
3500 BCE
Potter's Wheels developed
Potter's wheels were developed for use in forging other tools such as glasses or buckets out of clay. -
3200 BCE
Wheel and Axle system developed
Now, wheels would spin with the axle. These were used under vehicles such as chariots. -
1800 BCE
Spoked wheel developed
Before this time, wheels were constructed of a single peice of wood. Now, spoked wheels were developed in northwest India featuring a hub, spokes, and an outer layer. -
Wire Wheels
Wire Wheels allowed for cheaper production while still providing support for loads. -
Use of the Tire
The tire was developed to give the wheel cushion and prevent wear. Rides would be smoother allowing for transport of fragile materials.
