Devised by Henry Clay, the Missouri Compromise is signifigant because it controlled slavery in the west by making Missouri a slave state and making Maine a free state and banning slavery north of 36, 30 N lattitude. It is signifigant to help causing th civil war because Southerners were upset about slavery being limited to certain areas. -

Nathaniel Turner's Rebellion
Nathaniel Turner saw an eclipse and thought that God was telling him to revolt against the injustices of slavery. He led a group of armed slaves and killed anyone that owned a plantation. By the time the revolt was over Nat Turner killed around 55-65 whites killed and about 100-200 slaves killed in the after math of the rebellion. This is signifigant to the civil war because this shows that slaves were starting to find the courage to revolt/run away from their owners. -

Wilmot Proviso
Made sure that the new territories aquired from Mexico were free lands and not slaveholding lands. This is signifigant to the Civil War because it meant that slavery would not spread so thus making Southerners angry. -
John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry
Started by John Brown, an abolotionist who believed that an armed slave rebellion was the answer to the slaves gaining freedom. He was funded by wealthy abolitionists and he was caught and hung. -
