  • The Oka Crisis Begins

    The Oka Crisis of 1990 was a dispute over land between the provincial law enforcement of Oka, a town in Quebec, and a group of Mowhawk people. The dispute was over the suggested expansion of a golf course onto land that encompassed a Mowhawk burial ground.
  • The Goods and Services Tax (GST) comes into effect

    The Goods and Services Tax, proposed by Brian Mulroney, was created to replace the Federal Sales Tax (FST).
  • The Canadian Forces Join the Gulf War

  • Kim Campbell Becomes the First Female Prime Minister

    Kim Campbell was Canada's first and only female prime minister. She was only prime minister for 132 days, which was the third shortest in Canadian history.
  • The Federal Government Formally Apologizes to the First Nations People

    In 1996, after much research, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples (RCAP) determined that it was vital for Canada to repair its relationship with the First Nations people of Canada, this led to the formal apology to the First Nations people and the 20-year agenda of changes to treaties, employment, education, healthcare, and other issues.
