    political machines controlled the votes in cities. These were groups who gave food and things to immigrants in exchange for their votes. they dominated local and state government.

    Manifest Destiny was something created by the government to make people want to move all across america. they made people believe that god wanted for man to live all across the united states and people believe it. Man had to spread across the nation to the other side and touch the pacific ocean
  • Suffrage

    suffrages defintion means the right to vote in political elections. The word was used as the name of the womens suffrage movement. the movement was to try and give the rights to vote to women
  • Susan B. Anthony

    susan was a women's rights fighter and then got arrested for trying to vote. She also fought to end the practice of slavery she along. Created "The Revolution" newspaper which focused on women's suffrage
  • Homestead Act

    the homestead act was an act that opened up 80 million miles of land up to the citizens of the america. the act gave people 160 acres of land to anyone who wanted to go west and live there for 5 year to be able to claim the land. the Homestead Act encouraged Western.
  • The Gilded Age

    this was the era of wealth in american name was created by Mark Twin. this was also was the era of corruption. the name is a play on words of The Golden age but is called the gilded age. Gilded means something covered by a very thin leaf of gold. might look good on the out side but its ugly underneath. the gilded age was an era of politcal corruption and very fast expanding industries. names of some people who got rich in this era include carnegie, Morgan, and Rockefeller.

    this was when more people started to live in larger cities. more cities were being created. the population of cites and of the nation increased.
  • Haymarket Riot

    this event was caused by tension between workers and business owners. This took place after a bombing that killed 7 police officers in Chicago. Four protesters were also killed in this event
  • Dawes Act

    the Dawes act provided families with 160 acres of land to be able to farm at. if they didn't want to farm they were given 320 acres of land to be able to graze. it also created school for native american children to be able to be more american.
  • Ida B. Wells

    Wells was an early supporter of women's suffrage. She was one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Wrote a book about lynching to let people think it was about how people wanted control in the south by intimidating them.
  • Andrew Carnegie

    Andrew carnegie led a large expansion of the American steel industry. He was one of the largest steel producers in the U.S. in the 1900's. He Made Carnegie Hall in New York 1891.
  • Immigration & the American Dream

    the american dream was to get rich and being able to pray to whom ever they like. most immigrants came from southern and eastern Europe. they got treated badly because they didn't have an education like americans did.

    these were journalist who write to expose injustice and filith in society. The muckrakers played a highly visible role during the Progressive Era.
  • Klondike Gold Rush

    Klondike Gold Rush was a phenomenon in which hundreds of thousands of people went in venture for gold. the people ventured out to the northwest Canada in hopes of striking gold and getting rich. Sadly only a few thousand people really hit gold and got wealthy out of it and the rest wasted their time and money traveling to Canada.

    ran for president to fight for the workers rights. He was one the leaders of the american railway union and the pullman strike. Got arrest while running for president in one of his rallies.
  • Theodore Roosevelt

    He became the 26th president of the united states when McKinley got assassinated. Awarded the nobel peace prize for his negotiation with Russo - Japan war. He helped make food safe for his people by the meat inspection act.
  • Pure Food and Drug Act

    passed in 1906 it was the first law to make food safe for people. the law prohibited things to get added like drugs to make people get addicted to the food. It made that producers have to put labels on their products that shows the additives in the product.
  • 16th Amendments

    The government has the power to take taxes from income.this helps pay teachers build roads and pays for the army. was created after the civil war to help pay the debt.
  • 17th Amendments

    this amendment gave power to the people by letting them vote for senators instead their state legislatures.under the 17th amendement there can only be 2 senators for each state. it provides a direct election of US Senators.
  • Dollar Diplomacy

    this was the attempt for the united states to give loans to foreign countries. they used their economic power to try to get political influence in latin America and eastern Asia. It was started under President William Howard Taft.
  • Federal Reserve Act

    this helped banks help smaller banks to stay in business. it created 12 banks. Federal bank system regulate money created by the government. was created because of the panic of 1893 a serious economic depression.
  • 18th Amendments

    this amendment was created to make the consumption of alcohol illegal. the ban didn't work and made the economy fail but made people rich as well. it was ended by the 21st amendement in 1933
  • upton sinclairf

    upton was the writer of jungle which was a book that exposed the meat packing industry. He was the founder of the American Civil Liberties Union.
  • jane addams

    Jane Addams was a leader in the women's suffrage and pacifist movements. She became the first american woman to win the nobel peace prize. She was the co-founder of hull house and the Aclu.
  • 19th Amendments

    ratified in 1920 the amendment was directed towards women. The 19th amendment guarantees all American women the right to vote. It prohibits states using gender and a qualification to vote.
  • Clarence Darrow

    He was a famous criminal defence lawyer for a man name scope. He was also a leading member of the American Civil Liberties Union.
  • Indian Removal

    This is when native americans were striped even more away from their land. People thought it was getting in the way of expansion in america. the removal gave the united states west of the Mississippi river.
