    Fugitive Slave Acts
    The first act was created in 1793 and said that all escaped slaves must be returned to their original owners. The second act was created in 1850 and said that there was severe penalties made for anyone who help a slave escape.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Louisiana Purchase
    Thomas Jefferson sent James Monroe over to France to negotiate the sale of the port of New Orleans which was in the Louisiana territory. Napoleon (the leader of France) did not need the Louisiana territory anymore and needed money to wage war with Britain. The entire territory was purchased then for $15 million.

    The Oregon Trail started in Independence Missouri and it ended in Northern Oregon. The Trail traveled for about 2,000 miles. The Oregon Trail was used for traveling. The Oregon trail was in use from 1804 until 1806.

    Acquisition of Florida- Treaty of Adam-Onis
    There were slaves running away from the U.S. into Florida territory that was by Spain. There were also Seminoles that would come and raid land in Georgia. Andrew Jackson was sent to patrol the border and send Seminoles back. Instead he invaded Florida. President Monroe was then advance to send a message to Spain, “govern or get out.” Spain decided to give up Florida.

    During the Missouri Compromise Missouri and Maine were added to the U.S. Missouri was added to the United States as a slave state and Maine was added to the United States as a free state. The Missouri Compromise also made it so that all states and territories north of Missouri's southern boarder must be free states.
  • Trail of Tears

    Trail of Tears
    Andrew Jackson ignored the orders of a treaty with the Cherokee. U.S. troops rounded up about 15,000 Cherokee and put them in prison camps. Local residents burned the native’s homes. Troops then sent the Cherokee west in groups of about 1,000 on a path known now as the Trail of Tears.

    Stephen F Austin brought 300 settlers into Texas that was owned by mexico. They decided they did not want to be apart of mexico anymore and started their own revolution. In the end, Texas won its independence and was its own country for 10 years. The U.S. then decided to annex (add on) Texas in 1845 under president Polk
  • Gold Rush

    Gold Rush
    John Augustus Sutter discovered gold in California for the first time in 1848. James Wilson Marshall was one of John Augustus Sutter's employees until January 24, 1848 when he discovered gold and the two decided to be partners. When the news broke out about their wealthy discovery they were overloaded with people rushing to get gold. With the gold the two partners discovered they decided to build up Northern California and the city of San Francisco.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
    This treaty was signed to end the Mexican - American War. As a result, the border between Texas and Mexico was established as the Rio Grande River. The U.S. also acquired the Mexican Cession which included the modern state of California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah.

    The Compromise was created by Senator Henry Clay. This effected New Mexico, Utah, California and The District of Columbia. The compromise hoped to bring peace between the free states and the slave states.
  • Kansas - Nebraska Act

    Kansas - Nebraska Act
    During the the Kansas - Nebraska Act, Kansas and Nebraska were added in the United States. The Kansas - Nebraska Act allowed the settlers to decide if they wanted the new states to be free states of slave states. The Missouri Compromise was repealed because of this act.
  • Westward Settlement

    Westward Settlement
    This promoted settlement on the westward land. It granted every buyer 160 acres of land to develop and settle on, but they could only acquire the land if they were 21 and older or the head of a family, they must pay a small fee, they must work on the land, and they must live there for five years.
  • Transcontinental Railroad

    Transcontinental Railroad
    Union Pacific Railroad and Central Pacific Railroad were the two companies involved in building the railroad. The Union Pacific Railroad started building in Omaha Nevada and build towards Central Pacific Railroad were they started building in Sacramento California. The railroad was used for travel and the transport of goods.
