Northwest Ordinance of 1787
The Northwest Ordinance was passed to provide a grib of possible states that could possibly be added to the Union. It happened because the congress wanted a way to figure out how many and the guidlines to what territories could possibly be added into being a state. The Ordinance happened in the Northwesr territory. It relates to the Westward Expansion because it was added territory that would eventually be in the Northwest. -
Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana Purchase was when the U.S. purchased a large amount of territory from France. This happened because Thomas Jefferson wanted to expand our territory westward. The Lousisana Purchased was created in America. The Louisiana Purchase relates to the Westward Expansion because Thomas Jefferson had expanaded our territory buy thousands of miles expanding our land westward. The land was sold to us for about 15 million dollars. -
Lewis and Clark Expedition
The Lewis and Clark Expedition was an expedition that went through the unchartered territories of America. The expedition put them in many dangerous situations and needed to be well documented. It happened because America Knew that there was land beyond what they had thought, they sent two men on the journey to search it. It happened along the Pacific Ocean and along other waters. It relates to the expantion because the expedition gave us an detailed idea of the lnad we could take over. -
War of 1812
The War of 1812 was a war that was fought for 4 years and we were fighting against Great Britian. The war would overlook the amount of land we were restricted to have. It happened because we had wanted to throw them out of our way and try to gain land, which didnt happen. It happened in the U.S. and parts of Canada. It relates to the Westward Expansion because it played a vital role in us attempting tpo gain more land, however our defeat ruined that. -
Eerie Canal
The Eerie Canal was a canal that had been opened in New York, the canal provided trade and transportation to and from New York. The canal happened because it was viewed as a great way to start being more open to the world, by connecting the Canal to one of the Great Lakes. It happened in New York. It relates to the Westward Expansion because it was away to expand trade and the amount o fground they had covered from one are to another. -
Purchase of Florida from Spain
The Purchase of Florida from Spain was when the U.S. purchased Florida froom Spain after years of confrontation about the land, leading to it eventually being a U.S. state. It happened because we were looking to expand our land into the area of Florida. It happened in Florida beause Florida was the land that we were purhasing. It relates to the Westward Expansion because we were moving into Florida. -
Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was a compromise that admitted Missouri in as a slave state. It happened because the terriotory of Missouri was wanting to be added to the union. It happened in the Missouri territory, right above the divide line. It relates to the Westward Expansion because this was a time when not many states were added into the Union, with Missouri being added it also meant that Maine had to be added, to balance everything out. -
Indian Removal Act
The Indian Removal Act was an act passed by Andrew Jackson that removed Indians from federal territory. It happened beause Andrew Jackson didn't like Indians and wanted to force them to leave from their current home. It was passed to move Indians from the Mississippi River. It relates to the Westward Expansion because we were forcing the Indians out of their homes and into new territory. -
Trail of Tears
The Trail of Tears was a time when Andrew Jackson had decided that he didn't like the idea of Native Americans. The trail of tears was because the Indians were forced to move around, leaving Indians to die along the path. The Trail of Tears happened because when Jackson had became president he had expressed that he had always been a fan of removing Indians simply for him not liking them. The Trails of Tears happened along the Mississippi River. This relates because of assigned territory. -
Annexation of Texas
The Annexation of Texas was when the president took over a large amount of territory through multiple treaties. This happened because we had decided that we wanted what would be Texas, California and such. The treaty shortly took place after the Mexican-American War. The Annexation of Texas was when we had claimed Texas as a state, joioning it into the Union. This relates to the Westward Expansion because it was an important way for us to gain the land we needed, helping us expand our land. -
Mormon Movement
The Mormon Movement was a movement for Mormons who moved away from their homeland into new territory. It happened because they felt that thier current home was without peae and they feared others. They moved to a Valley near the Great Salt Lake. It relates to the Westward Expansion because the Mormons were moving into the West for new land they could live in. -
California Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush was when people rushed to California due to the large amount of money being drawn out by the founding of gold. The Gold Rush happened because someone had found gold and over time the information was spreading, leading to people moving into California. The Gold Rush happened in Sacramento Valley, California The gold rush relates to the Westward Expantion because at the time California was apart of the new territory we had gained from the Mexican-American War. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was a treaty signed between the U.S. and Mexico that helped extend our land over 500,000 miles. It happened because America was looking to expand into thpose areas because they wanted them. It happened in Mexico and ended the war we were fighting with them. It relates to the expnsion because we expanded into those area more than 500,000 miles. -
Oregon Territory
The Oregon Territory was territory that was admitted into the Union. It happened because America wanted to expand their lnad, buying the Oregon Territory. It happened in Oregon and was originally named the Territory of Oregon until admitted into the Union as a state. It relates to the Westward Expansion because Oregon was apaprt of the many territories we had wanted to gain to expand America. -
Gadsden Purchase
The Gadsden Purchase was when the U.S. purchased land from Mexico for about 10 million dollars. This happened because American wanted to expand its land. This happened in America. This relates to the Westward Expansion because America wanted to move into Mexico buy purchasing it to becaome U.S. territory. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
The Kansas-Nebraska Act was an act that over ruled the Missouri Compromise and meant that settlers would be allowed to determine if slavery would be in a new state. This happened because over time they realized that popular sovereignty would hvae to be the divider, letting the people solve the problems themselves. It happened in the lnad known as Kansas and Nebraska. It helped determine what we would do with those areas of land. -
Homestead Act
The Homestead Act was an act that gave land to anyone that was an American. by cetrain amounts of acres. It happened because farmers needed the land that would be granted for them, the land was meant for more benefit. It happened in the U.S., Nebraska. It relates to the Westward Expansion because land was what had to be granted to the farmers or any American citizen that could afford to purchase the Acres they needed. -
Transcontinental Railroad
The Transcontinental Railroad was the first railroad that was completed because of a gold spike. It happened because they had nneded was to properly transport materials without hard labor. The railroad happened in or completed in Utah. This railroad was apart of the Westward Expantion because it was build in the parts of the west that the U.S. wouldnt have owned unless it was bought or won over. It took place in the new territory and also provided transportation from place to place. -
The Dawes Act
The Dawes Act was an act that gave certain Indians the right to a selected amount of land, also providing land for their tribes. The act happened because the president thought that it would be a sort of compromise for the Natuve American tribes, providing them with land that they had needed for crops and other important resources. The Dawes Act was passed in the U.S. by president Cleveland. This relates to the Westward Expansion because this meant that land would be given to the Native Americans -

The Spanish-American War was a war the ended Spanish ruling in the Americas. It happened because America didnt want Spanish colonial ruling in America. It started in Cuba. It relates to the Westward Expansion beause the War gave us the territories in Western Pacific and Latin America.
