Slave acts
The first fugitive slave act said that all runaways were to be returned. The second act stated that those accused of being escaped slaves had no voice in their capture. -
Louisiana Purchase
We purchased Louisiana because we needed the port of New orleans. There were disputes because the constitution didn’t state that the president could buy land. -
Acquisition of Florida- Treaty of Adam-Onis
We patrolled the border but Jackson broke and invaded. In response we told them to govern or get out. In the end the ended up leaving. -
The Missouri compromise
It affected missouri and maine. Maine was a slave state while Missouri was free. Anything north of missouri’s southern border was a free state. -

Oregon Trail
It began in Missouri and ended in northern Oregon. It was about 2,00 miles long. It was used to expand west. -
The trail of tears
Andrew Jackson ignored the orders of a treaty with the Cherokee. U.S. troops rounded up about 15,000 Cherokee and put them in prison camps. Local residents burned the native’s homes. Troops then sent the Cherokee west in groups of about 1,000 on a path known now as the Trail of Tears. -

Originally to live in texas you had to become part of mexico. But people didn’t like this and fought for their independence. After many battles and losses, they got their independence. -
The gold rush
Gold was discovered by James Wilson Marshall. Once news about the gold got out people flocked from everywhere to strike it rich.

The compromise of 1850
Henry clay created the compromise. This affected New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, California, Texas, and western Colorado.
The compromise suggested the southern half could slaves, and the north wouldn’t. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
This ended the war and border dispute. In the end we also got a large sum of land. -
kansas-nebraska act
Nebraska and kansas were affected.
The northern half was not allowed slaves, while the south was.
The first election voting results on slavery were not counted because they were tampered with -
the homestead act
It promoted expanding west. It granted a buyer 165 acres of land.
The four rules/requirements of the act to acquire the land were, be 21, the head of a family, and improve the property. -
Transcontinental railroad
The two companies involved in building it were Durant and the big 4. Each company started their railroad in a different place, one in Omaha and one in Sacramento. This event was important because it showed humanity expanding and evolving.
