    In 1967, more than 500 people sat in Central Park for what was called a "fat in" where they ate, and burned diet books. This was the first large movement for fat pride.
  • Elliot Larsen Civil Rights Act

    In Michigan, a law was created that protected discrimination based off of, among other things, weight. This is the first of it's kind, and Michigan remained the only state to do so.
  • National Association to Aid Fat Americans Formed

    Bill Fabrey founded the NAAFA initially to support his overweight wife. However the strides it's made are so large, and he now sits on the board for the Council on Size and Weight Discrimination
  • Catherine McDermott Victory

    In the court of appeals in New York, Catherine McDermott won a suit against an employer who discriminated based off of the fact that she "might become impaired". She won damages but didn't take the employment.
  • Cassista V Community Foods

    This ruling stated that obesity was only a disorder if linked to a medical condition, and thus couldn't be covered under any existing legislation.

    In Frank V United Airlines, the airline was found not only to be discriminating on weight but also sex, because women had to be leaner than men. This was found to be weightism and sexism.

    Jennifer Potnick was an instructor who appeared overweight. Because of this, the company refused to hire her. She won the case, and though she didn't accept employment, is reputed to be the most energetic instructor her students have seen

  • EEOC V Watkins

    This ruling determined that a person must be physiologically impaired in order for their obesity to be classified as a disorder.
  • ADA Amended

    The amendment says, "severe obesity, which has been defined as body weight more than 100% over the norm … is clearly an impairment.’’
  • Nevada Proposes Discrimination Bill

    Nevada had a bill come into being that discrimination based on weight was illegal. The bill didn't make it through the house.
