week 4 activity: evolution of the national citizenry

  • Nationality Act of 1790

    Gave U.S. citizenship to "free white persons".
  • Indian Removal Act

    Allowed for the removal of Native Americans because they weren't U.S. citizens and therefore had no right to any land.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    Gave U.S. citizenship to the Mexicans living in the annexed part of Northern Mexico.
  • Dred Scott v. Sanford

    Ruled that slaves and free African Americans had no right to citizenship. This also meant that they did not have the rights that citizens had at the time.
  • Civil Rights Act

    Declared that all people born in the United States were American citizens, regardless of race
  • 14th Amendment

    Guaranteed citizenship for everyone born in the U.S. and gave every citizen the right to due process.
  • Naturalization Act of 1870

    Gave citizenship rights specifically to African-Americans and denied citizenship for other nonwhite groups.
  • Immigration Act of 1917

    Created a barred zone from the Middle East to Southeast Asia where no one could enter the United States, nor obtain citizenship.
  • Cable Act of 1922

    Restored citizenship to all U.S. born women who lost their citizenship because they married non citizen men
  • Indian Citizenship Act

    Gave all Native Americans citizenship.
  • Repeal of Chinese Exclusion

    Changed China's citizenship restrictions to the same as European countries.
  • Displaced Persons Act

    Allowed European refugees to regularize their status.
  • Immigration Reform and Control Act

    Increased border enforcement and increased the requirements of employers. Also created a system that gave amnesty for residents on the path to citizenship.
