Charles Darwin Feb. 12, 1809- April 19, 1882
Charles Darwin contributed to Philosophy by suggesting a theory of biological evolution. Within the biological evolution, he proposed natural selection was the cause behind this evolution. Darwin based this theory off observations from around the globe. Darwin’s big milestone with the theory is when he when to visit the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador.

During his adventure he observed the finch species and their beaks. He looked at the near islands and observed the finch species located there and noticed their beaks were different. Each finch’s beak within the species seemed well suited for their environment. He concluded that the beaks all had a design on what they ate. An article from Khan Academy states, “For instance, species that ate large seeds tended to have large, tough beaks, while those that ate insects had thin, sharp beaks.” -

Another observation was made when he noticed other local species and the nearby mainland were similar but if found on the other side of the world, they were different. After his trip he had talked to an ornithologist and learned the finches are different species, but they are related. This knowledge lead him to the concept of adaptation. After, Darwin refined the concept and resulted in two key ideas: evolution and natural selection. Link text -
