    17th Century Education

    Very limited, colonies were only mandated to have one school. Which only rich were able to attain an education and to go to school. Most were taught by family members. The United States saw the purpose of having schools to teach children how to read the bible so they could develop morals.

    19th Century Education

    This saw the first public schools being established. As well as the formation of the Department of Education. The first African American university was founded(Howard University). Towards the end of the century it saw the closer of a ton of schools due to the economic depression.
  • Plessy vs Ferguson

    Plessy vs Ferguson
    This case was about and African American man who refused to give up his seat and sit in the back of the car. Mr. Plessy thought his constitutional rights were violated which saw which lead to this case ending up in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court would rule in favor of racial segregation. It saw it as constitutional under the separate but equal doctrine. This meant for education that it was still constitutional to have segregated schools.

    20th Century Education

    With new labor laws in place children's went from factory jobs to being students in schools. It saw the formation of Association of American Universities as well as Progressive Education Association . Which provide public transportation for kids in school. Segregation finally ease to exists in schools.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    Linda Brown was denied entrance to Topeka’s all-white elementary schools. In which her father discussed in his law suit that schools for black children were not equal to the white schools. The supreme court would unanimously rule that racial segregation of children in public schools was unconstitutional. This meant that schools were no longer to able to dined students based on there skin color and lead to the integration of multicultural schools.

    Tinker vs Des Moines
    Two student wanted to show their support for a truce in the Vietnam war. They did this by wearing black arm bands. The principles would make an act that any student wearing an armband would be asked to remove it, with refusal to do so resulting in suspension. With this these two students would sue the school infringing on their free speech. The courts would dismiss the case and held that the school district's actions were reasonable to uphold school discipline.

    Title IX was created to protect people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities. After this schools would have to provide fair and equal treatment of the sexes in all areas, to receive federal funding. The biggest changes that were seen was the involvement and the improvement of felicities for women sports programs in schools.
  • Education of all Handicapped Children Act

    Education of all Handicapped Children Act
    Many children with disabilities were denied access. In fact only one in five children with disabilities were able to go to schools. This was due to the fact that many states had laws excluding certain students with disabilities. However, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act protected the rights of disabled students. This would help meet the individual needs of, and improving the results for infants, toddlers, children, and youth with disabilities and their families.

    Plyler v Doe
    The state of Texas would make a law to withhold state funding in schools that had children who were residing in the country without legal permission. This would lead to a case where school-age children from Mexico who were residing in Texas and were kicked out of school. This would go to the Supreme Court in which the court ruled that the children were protected under the Equal Protection Clause and that the Texas state law violated that clause

    Modern Day Education

    Education is a major emphasis and is extremely important to modern society. It saw attendance increase to 94%.from 59%. It is more assessable then it was ever been before.
