Week 10 Classroom Management strategies

  • Step 1

Problem: Holly calls out and yells constantly.
I establish classroom rules, routines and have class room signs reinforcing and encouraging established rules on the first day of class.
  • Step 2

At the start of each class, do a brief run-down of what we will be doing to let Holly know when it's OK to call out answers. I will say, "We're going to first do our writing exercise, then I am going to show you guys a few things, and then we will have class room discussion." This lets Holly know that classroom discussion will happen and that is the correct time to call out.
  • Step 3

Stop by Holly's desk while the class is working on their writing exercise to check in with her on how she is doing. This gives direct attention to Holly since she may be a student that requires a lot of attention and guidance.
  • Step 4

Holly calls out without waiting to be called on. I say, "Holly don't call out." Then I choose a student that did raise their hand. This is a gentle correction and reminder to Holly on what behavior is expected. Or I can say, "Holly how do we be respectful to our classmates?" Holly then actually raises her hand. I then call on her. This provides the actual practicing of the rule, modeling the rule, and positive reinforcement.
  • Step 5

Ignore the calling out. This provides reinforcement of enforcing the actual rule. She does not get attention. If I give her attention when she breaks the rule, this is just teaching her that it works and she can do it again and again. Ignoring is a passive way of reinforcing the rule of no yelling out.
  • Step 6

If all these methods fail, a one on one conversation needs to take place with Holly about classroom rules, and classroom etiquette. If she is not responsive, and continues to do this behavior more extreme direct measures will be taken like detention, a phone call to home, and being sent to the office.
