- Aboriginals immigrated to various places across North America
- Many theories on how they came to Canada, one suggests they came across a land bridge from Siberia to Alaska
- Inside of the Aboriginal race there are many distinctive cultures that have different ways of life
- 500 000 aboriginals already lived in Canada before Europeans came -
The French (1600 - 1760)
-French immigrate to Canada from years 1600 - 1760
-They settled in Port Royal in 1605 and in Quebec in 1608
-Came looking for riches such as gold and precious stones, instead found fish and animal fur
- Inter marriage with french and aboriginal created Metis culture
-With help from aboriginal cultures, the french established a colony called New France -
The Great Migration (1815 - 1850)
-British and European people immigrate to Canada from years 1815-1850
-They came because there was major unemployment due to the Industrial Revolution
-They were trying to get away from political unrest and poor economic conditions
-During these years Canada's population went from 500k to 2.5m
-Now British people were the largest culture in Canada -
Post Confederation Immigration (1867 - 1914)
-Eastern Canadians, Americans, British, other Europeans migrate to Western Canada from 1867 - 1914
-Canadian government started migrating people west to develop the prairies and promised them homes of 160 acres
-Government encouraged more settlement by building the Canadian Pacific Railway
- Huge numbers of immigrants came in 1896 because of the good agriculture, campaigning and easier transportation
- Alberta and Saskatchewan created in 1905 due to the benefits of the west -
Post War and Mid-Twentieth-Century Immigration (1919-1969)
-1.5 million people come from 1919 - 1969, mostly non-British europeans
-After WWI immigrants came if they were struggling with postwar problems
-Also came looking for better living conditions
-These immigrants settled in cities to work in industries
-However, immigration reduced during Great Depression because of high unemployment
-Also The Dust Bowl in the Praries reduced immigration due to bad conditions -
Recent Immigration Patterns (1970-present)
-In 1970 bad conditions in Europe start to calm down
-Canada starts to bring in immigrants from other countries such as the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa and Asia
-Some immigrants are refugees escaping war or persecution
-Other immigrants come for job opportunities, education, etc
-They generally settle in big cities (eg. Toronto)
-In the first 10 years of immigration, immigrants were mostly highly education and skilled
-By 1981 refugees make up 25% of immigrants in Canada
