FBI knows the break-in was ordered by the reelection committee
The Washington Post reported the FBI learned the spying and sabotaging was ordered by Nixon's reelection committee. -
Reelection
Nixon won the election by a landslide, one of the biggest ever in American history, with more than 60% of the votes in this election. -
Alexander Butterfield revealed Nixon’s secret tapes
In a congressional testimony, Alexander stated that since 1971 Nixon had been recording all conversations and telephone calls to and from his office. -
Nixon stops taping system
So no more information could be used against him he reportedly stopped the recordings in the White House. -

Nixon unwillingly hands over tapes to supreme court
In a unanimous decision by the Supreme Court, they ruled that Nixon had to turn over tapes of 64 conversations. They did not allow Nixon to say he had exclusive privileges. -
First article of impeachment is passed
The House Judiciary Committee passed the first of three impeachment articles, charging Nixon with obstruction of justice. -
Nixon resigns
Nixon was the first president in the United States to resign. Gerald R. Ford became president.
