On this day the United States purchase 530,000,000 acres of land from France; specifically Napoleon. This costed the United States $15 million dollars. This purchased doubled the size of the United States which made Jefferson much more popular. -

After making peace with Russia after the Battle of Friedland Napoleon decides to place an embargo on Great Britain. This banned all trade. -
Embargo Act
This was a law that was passed by the United States Congress. Signed by Thomas Jefferson in 1807. This law banned all American ships from trading in all foreign ports. -
War Hawks
As the Americans grew angrier at Britain some leaders demander war against them. These people who demanded for this war were known as the War Hawks. They put political pressure on the Americans. This group was led by John C. Calhoun and Henry Clay. -
Madison Elected
James Madison a Democratic-Republican beat out Charles C. Pinckney a Federalist in the 1808 election. Madison recieved 122 electoral votes and Pinckney recieved 47. James Madison becomes the 4th President, he would be inagurated on March 4th, 1809.
