Battle of Detroit
This was one of the first battles of the War of 1812. During the War of 1812, American General William Hull surrenders Fort Detroit and his army to the British without even fighting. Battle of Queenston Heights
This was one of the most famous battles of the war, and was the struggle for a portion of the Niagara escarpment overlooking Queenston. During this battle, more than 1,000 American soldiers crossed into Upper Canada. Part of the American force reached the top, circled the British artillery position and forced the British from the Heights. This battle temporarily arrested the U.S. attempt to invade Canada. -
Battle of Lake Erie
U.S. Captain Oliver Hazard Perry leads a fleet of nine American ships to victory over a squadron of six British warships at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. This victory forced the British to abandon Detroit, ensuring U.S. control over Lake Erie and the territorial northwest. -
Battle of North Point
The Battle of North Point was an engagement with the British trying to take over Baltimore during the War of 1812. A limited victory for the British, the battle allowed the Americans to bolster their defences in the region to ultimately stop the larger British advance into Maryland. -
Battle of New Orleans
In the Battle of New Orleans, future President Andrew Jackson and an assortment of militia fighters, frontiersmen, slaves, Indians and even pirates stopped a frontal assault by a superior British force, inflicting devastating casualties along the way. The victory helped foil plans for a British invasion of the American frontier.
