    During this time period, sailors from the United States were being captured and kidnapped by British and French troops and pirates. Their ships were also being robbed and taken for the goods on them. This caused the States to go to war because they were tired of being robbed.
  • Washington's Proclamation of Neutrality

    Washington's Proclamation of Neutrality
    President Washington announced his Proclamation, even though it was not technically announced as neutrality, it declared the United States would remain in contact with the French Treaty. This was meant to appease both halves of his cabinet. However, as always, they disagreed and Jefferson believed it was only Congress' ability to control the proclamations with foreign nations.

    The Jay Treaty, originally created by John Jay, was created in order to deter Great Britain from going to war with the United States. However, this so called treaty did not change anything at all. It succeeded in lowering tensions between the United States and Great Britain due to them being on the brink of war, however, it was sheerly a political act to make it seem like we are doing something good for the people and it prevented us from going to war with Great Britain.

  • Embargo Act of 1807

    Embargo Act of 1807
    The Embargo Act of 1807 was an act created by the American government in order to prevent trade and commerce from flowing with France and Great Britain. The reason for this was to attempt to make the two nations stop raiding our ships and kidnapping our sailors, however, this backfired because the entire United States economy came to a standstill and was unable to continue. The act was repealed on March 1, 1809.

    This was an affair in which an American ship with a large amount of cargo and weapons were raided and 3 men were killed and 18 were injured. This made the entire country furious and want to go to war even more so now.

    The War Hawks were a group of young Southerners and Westerners who wanted war on Great Britain. The reason they wanted war with Great Britain was because they wanted to gain more land such as Florida and the Northwest.

    Tecumseh was a Native American in which he believed the white people would not stop conquering land until they had conquered it all and there was none left. This lead him to create an alliance with Britain in attempts to beat the settlers of America in order to preserve the land they have.

    On June 8th, 1812, the United States formally declared war on Great Britain. The reason the United States declared war was because no matter their efforts for peace or a simple resolution, Great Britain would not stop seizing ships and kidnapping soldiers and the United States had had enough and decided to go to war and end it. This war lasted 2 years and 8 months until Great Britain sent of the Treaty of Ghent.

    Tecumseh was not fully successful in gaining his fully built American Indian nation as he wished. The alliance he had joined caused him to lose his life to the American soldiers when he was overwhelmed along with the British in the Battle of the Thames River. This was a large downfall for the Native Americans because he was a large leader for them and had large goals and ideals he wanted for the new government of the Native Americans.

    Hartford Convention
    This was a convention that was secretly held from December 15, 1814 to January 5, 1815. The purpose of this convention was to change some of the amendments in the Constitution or to add some because many people did not like how James Madison was doing in the war. However, as the messenger was on the way to deliver an ultimatum, news of a large victory broke out and a peace treaty known as the Treaty of Ghent had arrived and ended the war.

    The Treaty of Ghent was the treaty that was created to officially end the War of 1812. It caused Great Britain to give up their claims on the Northwest land and in turn they both agreed to help end the slave trade.
  • Battle of New Orleans

    The was the most significant battle of the War of 1812. This is because Andrew Jackson won against the British troops with a large number less troops than the British and not as prepared as them either. This was crucial because the British had been located at the east bank of the Mississippi River and this is important because it was the best way for Americans to have trade and commerce.
