The horse is left in the stables with little food or water. One day the drunken mans son finds the horse and falls in love. Some of the only comfort joey feels is in his stable mate zoey who is a plow horse. -

One night Alberts father makes a bet that young Joey could plow a whole feild. Albertand Joey trained hard and despite threats from his father they both stayed in good health but Albert worried Joey couldnt do it. In the end Joey and Albert plowed the field. Meanwhile war had begun in belgium. -

That summer Albert began to ride Joey the two developed a deep bond Alberts father wanted to sell Joey but Albert refused one dayAlbert is convinced to drive into the valley. As soon as Albert was gone his father snuck into the barn and tricked Joey into a halter claiming everything would be fine. -

Joey and Zoey are marched into town soon they realized what has happened after they had been sold to captain nicholls for 40 pounds each. Joey gives up hope when he sees Albert sprinting towards him, captain Nicholls explains to Albert what has happened Albert plaeds with the captain but the only thing Albert gets is reassurance he will get his horse at the end of the war and a chance to say goodbye. -

Joey is forced into a training camp before going into war his commanding officer is stricked and ruff with him but Joey like the Captain he is kind to him and always compliments him and keeps him company. The captain sends Albert one of his sketches of Joey. Joey finds competition in the other horses.War comes to Joey, his first week is spent travelling from camp to camp but soon Joey was forced to mount for battle all in a day many horses and riders were killed including captain nichols. -

Since the captain was dead a man named Trooper warren was assighned to Joey, Joey and the trooper became good friends,Joey spent the winter with Warren he heard all the terrible things the war caused, in one of Joeys battles him and Warren were taken hostage, the horses were treated well and were used as an ambulance picking up men on the battlefield they were heroes to the towns people a young girl named emilie came and rubbed them down each night. -

When Emilie fell sick with pneumonia the horses gave her hope and kept her alive.The war moves and the horses service is no longer needed they are left in the care of Emilie and her Grandfather. One day a group of unfamiliar soldiers comes and takes the horses, they are forced into much harder work conditions they were rarely fed or cleaned the helped pull weapons and dig trenches many horses were put down. Despite pleas from the vet the horses were overworked and became sicker each day. -

As spring arrives the horses are treated better they are allowed to Graze and the only work they do is pulling ammunition carts. There are few battles for the horses to fight in one man nicknamed crazy old Friedrich takes a liking to the horses. When Autumn comes thje horses participate in excersizes with the gun team. -

One day one of the other horses is killed Joey cant stand the loss so he begins to run he runs til he cant run anymore.Joey finds himself in no mans land where he moves towrad the welsh soldiers but he soon becomes trapped in barbedwire both a german and a welsh soldier both come to help him. They flip a coin to see who gets Joey the welshman wins. -

Joey changes hands between allies many times when he ends up with a british troop he realizes that the stablehand is Albert the 2 reunite in a grand manor. Albert is consumed with the horse after much fighting and the loss of Alberts friend the war is over but Joey notices Albert seemed sad, Albert was soon told he could'nt take Joey to England, he would be auctioned in france soldiers find the money for albert. But he is outbid.In the end the man agrees to sell joey back. Joey and Albert go hom
