After captain nicholas is killed at the first war Joey gets a new rider. Although Joey gets a new rider, Joey dislikes the way he rides.

Joey and Topthorn are taken in by Emily & her grandfather. The horses work to pull the ambulance cart to the trenches to save woonded soliders, where the ambulance car couldnt go.

The army takes Joey and Tophorn back to pull guns, because they are short 2 horses.

A few years after the army takes the horses, Tophorn dies of Heart Failure, from being underfed and overworked.

After being cut badly by barbwire, Joey gets taken into a Veternairy Hospital, where he survives tentus, with the support of Albert.

After long days at war, the horses are auctioned off, the army has put money together to help Albert buy Joey, but they dont think it enough.

A man buys Joey, but then gives Joey to Albert, to spread the word that Emily took care of the horses during the war, and died of sickness at 15.
