    Assassination of Franz Ferdinand
    Franz Ferdinand was the Archduke of Austria-Hungary. He was assassinated in Sarajevo by a Serbian nationalist. This was done because the nationalists felt that Sarajevo should belong to Serbia and the Archduke was not "allowed" there.   • Canada Joins the War

    Canada Joins the War
    On this day, Canada and Newfoundland join the World War with Britain. They joined because on the day prior, Britain had declared war on Germany, and since they are dominions of Britain they were forced to join. This means that they started really pumping out military production as well as starting to get troops ready.     Second Battle of Ypres
    During this battle, the German soldiers released chlorine gas on the Canadian troops. This battle took place in Belgium and was important because it showed that Germany was not afraid of using tactics that were brutal and horrific.     Vimy Ridge
    This battle was one of the biggest attacks that happened during World War 1. There were also a vast amount of casualties that occurred(10600, 3600 killed). This involved capturing and then holding a ridge from the German troops. It also took a large amount of planning because all four of the Canadian Corps were working together.     The Armistice
    The Armistice allowed all the parties involved in the War(Axis powers and the Allies) to stop putting resources into the war. It meant that there was a temporary cease to the fighting. The armistice was signed in Compiègne. This was signed to allow each of the warring parties to stop fighting and try to come to an agreement.     The treaty of Versailles is the treaty that was signed by the Axis Powers and Allies that outlined all of the rules and regulations that Germany now had to follow.     Canada was one of the founding nations in the League of Nations. the LON, which helped show the world that they were now a capable nation. The LON did not accomplish its goals of keeping the peace during international disputes.     Treaty of Versailles Takes Effect
    This is the day that the Treaty of Versailles takes effect, this means that all the rules and regulations that were outlined now need to start being followed. The treaty basically limited Germanies military capacity, give up land and pay reparations to Britain.     Canada Declares War
    When Canada declared war on Germany, Britain had already been at war for a week. Mackenzie King, the current PM, decided to delay the declaration a week to show the world that they were truly independent of Britain and could make their own decisions.     This was one of the main ways Canada contributed to the war early on. This was a way of training Royal Airforce pilots safely. Britain was not in a good position for high priority projects because an attack could be launched at any time. For this reason, many British Pilots were trained away from these threats in Canada and then shipped back once ready.     On this day the Canadian government declared that communists, nazis, fascists were illegal. This allowed the government to put the leaders of those groups in jail. This gave citizens of Canada a feeling of safety and protection from these groups.     Pearl Harbor Attack
    When Pearl Harbor was attacked out of the blue, it was a shock to everyone. This allowed the Canadian government to enact the WMA and arrest 38 Japanese-Canadian and remove many others from their coastal homes.     The Manhattan Project was the joint scientific research into atomic weapons done by the US, UK, and Canada. This research was done across many research facilities in the 3 countries. This allowed the joined countries to be ahead of the curve in creating the first Atomic Bomb. This type of bomb was later used to officially end World War II by dropping 2 bombs on 2 Japanese cities.     United Nations Forms
    The United Nations(UN) is a more effective version of the League of Nations. There 4 main goals are to respect human rights, maintain international peace, international cooperation, and develop friendly relations among nations. They do this by having a large committee with representatives from almost every country in the world.     Cold War
    The Cold war was dangerous for everyone because there was mutually assured destruction. This means that no matter who attacks first, both countries will get bombed. This was possible through the use of nuclear bombs and better bombing planes. This war caused many new technological advancements such as the DEW line and NORAD.     The Vietnam War was between Northern Vietnam and Southern Vietnam with the United States. Canada was acting as a peacekeeping country but they were also backing up the United States which they were not supposed to do as a peacekeeping country.     The United Nations sent in peacekeeping troops to supervise the cease-fire that had been called. They were there to make sure neither one of the countries was tricking the other and was going attack when the other was looking away.     This was the decision to increase the United Nations presence in Haiti so that they could help supply more resources and medical help for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.
