Wandering of the Magyars

    The Uralic Times

The Magyars are said to be originated from the Ural Mountains. Unfortunately, due to the lack of evidence, it's hard to be certain, but it is most likely that we lived on the eastern side of the mountain range, and started our wandering from there
  • Period: 500 BCE to 500

    Magna Hungaria

The Magyars spent a lot of amount of time in Magna Hungaria. Even though it was a long time ago, there is evidence to support this statement. This was first confirmed by Friar Julianus, who made two expeditions to find out the Magyars past. In Magna Hungaria, the Magyars learned a new way of living, adopting a nomadic lifestyle. This lifestyle proved to be so successful that the seven Hungarian tribes overpopulated, forcing them to move on.

    Levedia

The Magyars lived in Levedia around the 8th century, but they didn't stay for long. Levedia is located near the Azov Sea, but it was already within the territory of the Khazar Khaganate. However, it was a dual principality with the Magyars. Not surprisingly, the Magyars didn't like paying taxes, so they moved on soon
  • Period: 850 to 895

    Etelköz

After Levedia the Magyars ended up in Etelköz. Etelköz was perfect for the animals and the Hungarian nomadic lifestyle as it was a big plain. The problem is that it was vulnerable to attacks and they lost many women during these raids made by the Pechenegs.
  • Period: 895 to 907

The conquest of the Carpathian Basin

The Magyars were desperate to find a new home. Fleeing from the Pechenegs, they decided to conquer the Carpathian Basin, although it was already inhabited by Moravians and Bulgarians. The tribes entered the basin through passes (Vereckei Hágó) led by Árpád
  • 899

    Transylvania

The Magyars fully occupied Transylvania by the end of 899, but this was only the stepping stone to the conquer of the whole basin.
  • 902

    The Defeat of the Moravians

The Magyars needed new lands and women as they lost both in Etelköz. After Transylvania the Hungarians moved on to get more territory. The raids against the Moravians proved to be successful and in 902 they defeated them as a whole.
