The first Polynesians arrived in NZ. -

Captain Cook arrived in NZ. -

Pakeha arrived to hunt seals and whales. -
1830
Around two thousand Europeans were living in NZ, most of them British and many more wanting to come. -
1835
James Busby created the Declaration of Independence. It was created to show NZ was an Independent nation. -
1840
William Hobson arrived in the Bay of Islands. He had been sent to secure British rule over NZ. He then started to write a treaty. Very few missionaries spoke Maori and few Maori spoke English, so a missionary named Henry Williams and his son Edward translated the treaty into Maori. -
1840
The treaty of Waitangi was signed and translated into Maori. Chief Hono Heke signed first so it looked like ever over chief followed him. -
1845
The NZ wars started between the natives and the British. The Maori with barely any weapons were on a disadvantage which leads to them losing and having to retreat and surrender. -
1865
The Native Land Court is established. -
1872
The NZ wars ended and the Maori had lost the war. -
1900
Lots of Maori land has been taken off them because of the NZ wars and it had been bought very cheaply or unfairyly. Without land maori couldn't grow or catch food for there familes. No land also ment they had lower chance of getting a income, over the decade maori protested over the land. -

James Carroll makes his speech in parliment. -
1960
Waitangi Day is established as a national holiday of commentation, thirteen years later it becomes a national holiday. -

The tribunal's powers are extened to investagate historic claims. -

The Watangi Tribunal is set up and extend. -
1989
The first modern treaty settlement is agreeded over land at Waitomo Caves. -
2018
Jacinda Adern spends 5 days in watangi meeting with maori. It is the longest visist any prime minster has had so far.
