Sir Charles Wheatstone did research to explain binocular vision. Which demonstrated that the brain takes to pictures of the same image and combines to make a 3-D image. He invented the Mirror Stereoscope to demonstrate this. -

Sensorama
It was the first VR machine, patented in 1962. It was a large machine fitting up to four people at a time. The inventor wanted to fully immerse people in the film, it combined all the senses 3-D video, audio, vibrations, smells, and atmosphere effects like wind. it was a truly impressive machine still 40 years after its creation. -

Military engineer Thomas Furness creates first flight sim for the US Air Force. This feat heavily help advanced VR as the government dumped lots of money in for funding. -
Head Mounted Display
Ivan Sutherland and his assistant Bob Sproull create the first HMD VR. It was hooked up to a computer rather than a camera. It never made it out of a lab as it was to heavy for the user to wear and had to mounted from the ceiling. -
Upgraded Flight Simulator
General Electric creates a computerized version. It had a 180 degree viewing angle with 3 screens as you sat in a cockpit. -
Aspen Movie Map.
Created by MIT the program enabled users to wonder through Aspen Colorado. With 3 modes Summer, Winter, And Polygons. It had taken pictures from from the top of a car driving around and you could explore through the city on one of the computers this was an early version of Google Earth -
Sayre Gloves
These were the first wired gloves that monitored movements with light emitters and photocells. This was used in a flight simulator developed for the military. -
First VR company
VPL Research was the first company to sell VR goggles and gloves. With a small variety of products the DataGlove, EyePhone HMD, and the Audio Sphere which was only three products but advanced for the time. The company was founded by Jaron Lanier and Thomas Zimmerman. -
VIEW
Virtual Interface Environment Workstation was developed by a new company Crystal River Engineering that had a contract with NASA. This was a VR system for astronauts to help simulate operating a space shuttle. -

Georgia Tech helps create a VR simulation for veterans with PTSD. This was a simulation of Vietnam to help with the exposure treatment. -

Google introduces google street view. This was the first time a camera on top of a car was getting crystal clear photos. -

The Rift released in 2012 was a major jump for video game history. Bought by Facebook for $2 billion this was also a huge jump for VR as now the public could get in on it, and then many companies like Samsung, Sony, and Google start releasing their own products. -
VR madness
Hundreds of companies are now in the action. With an industry worth a whopping 7.2 billion dollars you would expect everyone wanting in. you can no buy headsets and handsets for the home and now many simulators at attractions and theme parks across the world. -

People wear headstands on a day to day basis
They predict that by 2025 we will be using it regularly to do school/office work. Then that we will not need use for going to work to an office building. -
Cars will not need windsheilds
That by that time we will were headsets in cars to watch for traffic. That also we will all have self driving cars and we will not need to be awake to drive or we can do other stuff on VR. -
Teleportation
We will be completely be able to teleported to places for weeks at a time and interact with other real people.
