Franco-Prussian War and death of mother
There is war in France and Julie Francois' mother dies. Father leaves the next day because he can't take care of his three children Julie, Jean, and Jaques. -
On the way to America
Julie and her two brothers find money and decide to go to America to escape war and start over. Julie brings with her 20 Francs, two dresses, and a picture of her mother. -
Out at Sea
Julie, Jaques, and Jean are out at sea and have about a month until they arrive in America. They are cold and hungry but very excited. -
Two days to America
Julie and her brothers are two days away from America. Jean has a cold and they are afraid he wont make it through Ellis Island inspection. -
AMERICA!
Julie and her brothers make it to Ellis island. Jean gets detained during medical inspection for coughign and sneezing. They all have to wait for a day. -
Sent back
Julie's youngest brother, Jean gets sent back to France for having a cold. -
Living in New York
Julie and her older brother rent a small apartment that is shared with another family. They must find a job soon. The Francs Julie brought from France are of very little value in New York. -
Work
Julie gets a job at a clothing factory where she has to work long hours in a very crammed space. Very slowly Julie is leraning English. -
Robbed
All of Jaques possessions are stolen while working home from his job on payday. These include a hat, his weekly salary, and food he was bringing for dinner. They now have to rely mostly on Julie's job, at least for the week. -
Out of the City
Tired of New York, and in hopes of being able to move west Julie, Jaque, and the people they are sharing they're apartment with pool their money to buy supplies and start the journey to Oklahoma. -
Moving West
With all their supplies ready the journey starts West towards Oklahoma in hopes of their own land and yet another chance to restart their life without an exhausting job in a factory or crowded cities. -
Birthday
Julies birthday is celebrated on the trail to Oklahoma with slightly larger rations. The trip is proving hard, but is worth it if it means Julie gets her own land with Jaque. -
Sick on the Trail
On the trail just about a month or so away from Oklahoma Julie gets sick with the flu. Through resting an extra water rations she recovers in four days. -
OKLAHOMA!
Arrive in Oklahoma! Jaque starts preparing for land race to claim their piece of land here in the West. All possesions/food is evenly split with the people they travelled with. -
Home
Julie and Jaque finally have their land and have gotten their land started. A house is in progress and will be ready soon. It was a treacherous journey to get to where they are, but they finally made it.
