Voting Rights in the United States

  • Constitution is Ratified

    All white, land owning, males could vote.
  • Religious Qualifications Dropped

    The last religious requirement to vote has been eliminated.
  • Property Requirements Dropped

    The requirement to own land and pay taxes has been dropped. Almost all white males can vote.
  • 15th Amendment

    The 15th amendment gives former slaves the right to vote, and protects the voting rights of all adult males of any race.

    The 23rd amendment allows people of the District of Colombia voting rights in presidential elections.

    The 24th amendment bans the poll tax in federal elections.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    To protect the rights of minority voters the act eliminates voting barriers, such as the literacy test.
