13th Amendment
At the end of the civil war, after the north won the 13th amendment was written to abolish slavery. This gave the right for African Americans to be free from slave holders. -
15th Amendment
This amendment was written so African Americans males had the right to vote. It was now the law that states could not denied a citizen the right to vote based on race or color. -
Laws to take voting rights from African-Americans
Southern states passed laws limiting the rights to African Americans also known as Jim crow laws. This was away for them to have the freedom but southern states found a loop hole so they wouldn't still be treated like everyone else. -
Supreme Court Rules that Literacy Test are Constitutional
Also considered a Jim crow law literacy test were given to who ever they see fit. They were given to mostly people of colored and were given a test and if they pasted they could vote, if not didn't get to vote. -
Grandfather Clause is Declared Unconstitutional
The grandfather clause was a law stating if your grandfather couldn't vote you couldn't vote. It was place to stop African Americans from voting because most were grandsons of former slaves. -
19th Amendment
The 19th amendment gave the right for woman to vote.This meant that the states cant denied a vote because of sex. -
Poll Taxes are Constitutional
The poll taxes gave state the right to tax voters. To vote you would be tax no matter race or gender. -
24th Amendment
The 24th amendment declared poll tax unconditional which ended poll taxes. This gave everyone the right to vote without getting taxes. -
Freedom Summer
This was the event that attempted to get African Americans registered to vote. This was held in Mississippi. -
Voting Right Act
This law band the use of Jim crow laws and there racial discrimination. This made everyone have the same rights for everyone.
