Invention of Volleyball
The game of volleyball, originally named “mintonette,” was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan after the invention of basketball only four years before by James Naismith. USVBA (United States VolleyBall Association)
USVBA is a non-profit organization which is recognized as the national governing body of volleyball in the United States by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB). This was founded due to the fact that it became clear that tournaments and rules were needed. -

-Maximum of three hits per side
-Player may not hit the ball twice (A block is not considered a hit)
-Ball may be played off the net during a volley and on serve
-A ball touching a boundary line is good
-Server must serve from behind the end line until after contact

-Ball must be clearly visible to opponents before serve
-Serve must be returned by a bump only. no setting or attacking a serve -
The beginning of the FIVB
The Federation Internationale De Volley-Ball (FIVB) was founded in Paris, France. Fourteen national federations representing five different countreis attending, where the organization was actually formed. -
Goals of the Congress
One of the main goals of the 1947 congress was acheived two years later with the establishment of the first international major volleyball event, the World Championship. -

Volleyball and the Olympics

The FIVB Volleyball World League is an international men's volleyball competition. Created in 1990, it is the longest and richest of all the international events organized by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball. -

Defensive Speacialist Role "Libero"
The defensive specialist position, aka the "libero" was introduced to the game of volleyball in 1999. The libero remains in the game at all times and is the only player that is not limited by the regular rules of rotation.The libero must wear a contrasting jersey color from his or her teammates and cannot block or attack the ball when it is entirely above net height. When the ball is not in play, the libero can replace any back-row player, without prior notice to the officials. -
