Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia.
Tensions were high after the heir to the Austria-Hungary throne Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, and Austria-Hungary sends Serbia an ultimatum that would allow for an inquiry to the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, and also would stop Serbian Propaganda against Austria-Hungary from being produced. Serbia refused, and Austria-Hungary officially declares war

Germany declares war on Russia
When Russia's Czar Nicholas started mobilising troops against Austria-Hungary, Germany declared war on Russia because of their alliance with Austria-Hungary. -
Germany attacks Luxembourg
German troops attacked Luxembourg with eh goal of having their troops easy access to nearby France. Luxembourg was quickly taken over by Germany, and would stay under their control until the war was over in 1918. -
United Kingdom declares war on Germany
The United Kingdom declared war on Germany for breaking a treaty. Since Canada was still connected with Britain, they were automatically involved in World War 1. -
Germany invades Belgium.
After the assassination of Austria-Hungary Archduke Franz Ferdinand, 43,000 Belgian troops were placed on their border. Germany then gave Belgium's King Albert and his government an ultimatum that gave them a choice of being conquered, or fighting. Belgian decided to fight the German troops even though they were heavily outnumbered. In the end the German forces would dominate the Belgium, and would eventually conquer most of Belgium. -

Unites States enters World War 1 on the side of Britain, France, and Russia
The US remained neutral throughout most of WW1, but on April 6th 1917 that all changed. Major General John J. Pershing took control of over 2 million US soldiers that would fight on battlefields in France. -

Battle of Vimy Ridege
The Battle of Vimy Ridge is one of Canada's most notable battles in World War 1. There were long tunnels built by the Canadians to navigate througj the escarpment on the Hindenburg Line. 20,000 Canadians soldiers fought in the Battle of Vimy Ridge, and on April the 12th 1917 the Canadian troops took over hill 145 and pimple, and becasue of this victory the Germans retreated. -

Battle of Passchendaele
The goal for the Allies in the Battle of Passchendaele was to gain control of the ridges that were south and east of the Belgian city of Ypres in West Flanders. The ground was very muddy, so wooden boards were put down so the troops would be able to navigate around the area. Canadaian troops arrived in October and took control in November. -
