Violence Timeline

  • Armenia/Azerbaijan

    President Bush reflected on the promise of a new era free of cold war pressures. A world in which freedom and respect for human rights find a home among all nations
  • Civil War in Africa (Mali, Somalia, Zambia)

    The UN, including many Americans, created Operation Restore Hope in order to help with the famine in Somalia. Fighting many rival clans prevented relief workers from receiving aid and Somalia continued to suffer.
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina

    UN had mixed results, yet dealing with the difficult situations in Somalia left nearly 150,000 people dead or missing by the end of 1993. UN sent peacekeeping forces into the area and launched an investigation into war crimes but the fighting still continued.
  • Libya and Gaddafi

    Clinton ordered bombing of Iraqi intelligence service headquarters
  • South Africa

    Africa held its first election allowing all races to vote. Nelson Mandela (Black Civil Rights Activist) Won presidency. Africa's future is starting to look hopeful
  • War in Kosovo

    US officials became concerned of events over seas. Wanted to involve themselves within the relations of Kosovo and the war there.
  • Israel/ Palestinian conflict

    President Clinton wanted to move peace process forward to Camp David. To start preventing new outbreaks of violence.
