The Vikings seized control of France and refused to leave until King Charles paid them to do so. -

The Vikings had been making small settlements in Ireland since the 840s. -

Alfred the Great makes a treaty with Danish Vikings.
The treaty detailed that the Vikings would be aloud to settle in England. This area was know as the Danelaw. -

The king of France makes a treaty with invading Vikings.
King Charles of France paid the Vikings 5,670 lbs of gold and silver. The Vikings were given land in this treaty which will later be know as Normandy. -

Erik the Red discovers Greenland.
After being banished from Island for 3 years fro murder, he sailed east and managed to stumble into Greenland. -

The English king, Ethelred, starts paying the Vikings.
He did this so as to stop them from invading. The payments were know as "Danegold". -

Leif Ericson sails east from Greenland to reach Labrador.
When Leif reached Labrador in North America, he set up a small viking settlement. -

The North American settlement is abandoned.

Danish chief Cnut becomes King of England.

The battle of Hastings.
In England, King Edward dies. Harold Godwinson becomes king. Another contender, William of Normandy, defeats King Harold at the Battle of Hastings and becomes king of England. He becomes known as William the Conqueror.
