  • The National Liberation Front

    The National Liberation Front
    The National Liberation Front (NLF), Vietnamese political organization formed on December 20, 1960. The National Liberation Front was created to effect the overthrow of the South Vietnamese government and the reunification of North and South Vietnam, later dubbed the Viet Cong, a Communist-led army and guerrilla force in South Vietnam that fought its government and was supported by North Vietnam, is established.
  • Gulf of Tonkin Incident

    Gulf of Tonkin Incident
    Two U.S. destroyers stationed in the Gulf of Tonkin in Vietnam that they had been fired up on by North Vietnamese forces. The United States said the attack was unprovoked. Gulf of Tonkin was to conduct reconnaissance and to intercept North Vietnamese communications in support of South Vietnamese war efforts.
  • Operation Pierce Arrow

    Operation Pierce Arrow
    American carriers launch Operation Pierce Arrow, flying 64 bombing runs against North Vietnamese patrol boat bases and oil storage facilities. Operation Pierce Arrow was marked the start of US air operations over North Vietnam, with the major goal being to destroy their facilities, war material, and military units.
  • Operation Rolling Thunder

    Operation Rolling Thunder
    The beginning of Operation Rolling Thunder, a campaign of sustained US bombing runs over North Vietnam. They would continue until late 1968. Operation Rolling Thunder was intended to intimidate North Vietnam into backing off of their aggression towards South Vietnam. the U.S. also hoped to limit their ability to wage war in the future.
  • Tet Offensive

    Tet Offensive
    The Tet Offensive unfolds in dozens of locations around South Vietnam. In Saigon, Viet Cong troops capture the US embassy for several hours, before being overrun and killed.Tet Offensive happened in the hopes of achieving a decisive victory that would end the grinding conflict that frustrated military leaders on both sides.
  • 101st Airborne Division

    101st Airborne Division
    The 101st Airborne Division becomes the last full US division to withdraw from Vietnam. The 101st is recognized for its unmatched Air Assault capability, its ability to execute any combat or contingency mission anywhere in the world
  • Easter Offensive

    Easter Offensive
    North Vietnamese forces launch the Easter Offensive, invading South Vietnam near Khe Sahn. With only 6,000 US combat troops left in the country, the defence is left almost entirely to the ARVN. Easter Offensive is a large, three-pronged drive into South Vietnam using heavy tanks and mobile units.
  • Paris peace

    Paris peace
    The Paris peace talks resume. In May 4th the Paris peace talks collapse again. US and South Vietnamese negotiations withdraw, citing a lack of progress. The Paris Peace Conference was a set of formal and informal diplomatic meetings.
  • Operation Linebacker II

    Operation Linebacker II
    The US launches Operation Linebacker II or the ‘Christmas bombings’ against targets in North Vietnam. The operation was the final major military operation carried out by the U.S. during the conflict, and the largest bombing campaign involving heavy bombers since World War II. Operation Linebacker II happened to force the communists back into serious peace negotiations
  • War Powers Act

    War Powers Act
    The US Congress passes the War Powers Act, designed to limit the president’s ability to wage war without a Congressional declaration of war. Richard Nixon vetoes the bill but his veto is overridden by a two-thirds majority of Congress. The purpose of the War Powers Act of 1973 was for Congress to check the power of the president and his ability to commit to war with another country.
  • Case-Church amendment

    Case-Church amendment
    The Case-Church amendment, passed by the US Congress the previous month, comes into effect. This legislation prohibits further American combat deployments in Vietnam, Laos or Cambodia, without the approval of Congress. US aid to South Vietnam is halved from $US2.2 billion to $1.1 billion. This happened In order to prevent a re introduction of United States forces into the conflict
  • Spring Offensive

    Spring Offensive
    The NVA begins its Spring Offensive with an attack on Ban Me Thuot in Dak Lak province. Spring Offensive was the final communist offensive of the Vietnam War, occurring between 13 December 1974 and 30 April 1975.
