A continuous air raid. This would go on to last 3 years. -
Teach-Ins
Teach-ins were done at colleges and universities. They became widespread. First teach-in took place at the University of Michigan. -
Veterans Stage Anti-War Rally
World War I, II, and veterans from the Korean war staged a protest rally in New York City. They burned papers that had to do with the war. -
Operation Cedar falls begins
A battle with 16,000 US troops and 14,000 South Vietnamese troops. They both set out to destroy the vietcong operations and supply sites. -
Tet Offensive
The guerrilla fighters attacked American airbases in South Vietnam and South's major cities and provincial capitals. It was a military disaster. -
Battle for Hue
A 26 day battle where the US and the South Vietnamese forces recaptured a site. The site was ceased by the communist during the Tet Offensive. -
Vietnamization
This cut back the number of troops in Vietnam. Approximately 2500 troops were taken out. -
Kent State
Ohio National Guard soldiers were armed with weapons. They consisted of tear gas and rifles. They were not ordered to fire, but they fired anyways. -
26th Amendment
Granted all citizens 18 or older the right to vote. This was in both state and federal elections. -
B-52 Bomb Hanoi and Haiphong
President Nixon tried to force North Vietnam to make a concession to peace talks. He ordered bombing to supply dumps and petroleum storage sites. -
War Powers Act
This required the president to inform Congress about troops going abroad within 48 hours and to withdraw them in 60 to 90 days. If Congress explicitly approved the troop commitment then it was all good. -
Cease-fire Signed in Paris
It was believed to bring peace to Vietnam and Southeast Asia. It went into full effect on January 28. -
End of Draft Announced
The draft stopped and no more soldiers were forced to go to war. Men could go to work instead of the war. -
Report Cites Damage to Vietnam Ecology
Long term effects became an issue to the ecology of Vietnam because the use of chemical herbicides during the war. Cancer, skin disease, and other disorders spread. -
South Vietnam Surrender
An invasion was sent out to South Vietnam to hurry their surrender. It worked because they surrendered. -
US Withdrawal of Troops
The President ordered all of the troops to be taken out. Families were reunited and back together again. The Americans were out of Vietnam.
