President Eisenhower
President Eisenhower ran in 1952 for the republican party. He ran against Adlai Stevenson and won, making him the 34th president of the United States. In 1956 he served another term until 1961. Eisenhower was a very sucsesful president. He created the interstate highway system, signed a bill to make NASA, signed the 1957 Civil Rights Act, and also eltablished Alaska and Hawaii part of the United states.

In 1954 under the immigration and nationalization service opperation wetback was devised. This increased deportation to illegal aliens- specifically mexicans. They were deportand with their children. Vietnam War Major Events: North Vietnamese at Dien Bien Phu 1954
Dien Bien Phu was a small mountain outpost on the Vietnamese border. It was occupied by the French. It was taken over by the Viet Minh. This ended the French colonial efforts in IndoChinca by the French. The US then stepped in to help Southe Vietnam, thus the start of the US involvment in the Vietnam War.

Brown vs. Board
This was a series of court cases in Topeka, Kansas. These court cases made it unconstitutional to segregate people according to race. Rosa Parks and the Bus Boycott
On December 1, 1995 Rosa Park refused to give up her seat to a white man on the bus. She was then arrested for breaking the law of the Jim Crow Laws. Because of Rosa Parks there was the a bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama. Motgomery bus desegregated
After the boycott in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955 there was a case called Browder vs. Gayle in 1956. 1957 Little Rock 9
In Little Rock, Arkansas in1957 9 black high school students decided to attend Central Highschool which was an all white highschool. They were attacked by many people even though segregation in schools was already illegal. 1960 Black students occupy white only lunch sit ins to protest segregation

President Kennedy
Before becoming president JFK was a congressmen and a senator. In 1960 JFK ran as a democrate of the presidential election. He ran against Nixon and won the election. This presidential election was very publicized for thr first time. Under his presidency he created the Peace Corps and negotiated the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. JFK was assasinated on Novemeber 22 in 1963 by Lee Harvey Oswald.

The US discovered that the Soviet Union was building missles on Cuba. JFK sent navy ships to surround Cuba. The Soviet Union agreed to take apart the missles and the US agreed to not invade Cuba. A nuclear was with the Soviet Union was avoided.

"I have a dream.." speech
Martin Luther King gave a speech in 1963 on the Lincoln Memorial during a March on Washington period. His 17 minute speech titled " I have a dream" was the highpoint of the March. It was broadcast on radio ad television. It was a speech that called for an end to discrimination.

Lydon B. Johnson
Lydon B. Johnson was the Vice President under John. F Kennedy. When JFK was assasinated he became the 36th President of the United States. He was sworn in on Air Force One imediatly. Johnson ran again in 1964 for his second term and won. He had a policy called the "Great Society" which helped pass Medicade and Medicare Acts as well as the Voting Rights Act.

The Civil RIghts Act was signed on July 2,1964. The Civil Rights Act stated that no one could be discriminated against regaurdless of thier race. This made it illegal for employers to discriminate. It is the most important Civil Rights Legislation ever.

Vietnam War Major Events: Gulf of Tonkin
On August 2, 1994 a US navy destroyer called Maddox was attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin by the North Vietnamese. It gave congress a reason to pass the Tonkin Gulf Resolution: This gave LBJ permission to use any forces needed in vietnam and this was refered to as a blank check.

Malcom X is assassinated
In 1965 black activist and leader Malcom X was assasinated by three black muslims. He was killed by speaking to an audience of a group that he started (Organization of Afro-American Unity).

1965 Voting Rights Act signed by LBJ
In 1965 LBJ signed an act which prohibited any reading tests or taxes that were in place simply to discourage blacks from voting. Vietnam War Major Events: Tet Offensive 1968
In 1968 the man in charge of North Vietnam army decided to make a surprise attack on the South Vietnam army. They broke a cease fire that had been called for to celebrate the Vietnamese holiday called Tet (The holiday for the lunar year). The North Vietnamese attacked about 100 cities. It lasted for about one month and even though the US was ultimatly the victor the North Vietnamese proved to be a strong army.

MLK is Assasinated
Martin Luther King was shot on the balcony of his hotel room in Memphis, Tennessee. An escaped convict names James Earl Ray was arrested and charged with Martin Luther Kings murder. Many people believe James Earl Ray was not responsible and they believe that the FBI is responsible for MLK's assasination.

Watergate was a hotel in Washington DC. Nixon was accused of knowledge was bugged by his campaign to find out information about the democratic party. He allowed it and knew of it. Vietnam War Major Events: US troops leave South Vietnam
In 1973 a peace agreement was signed in Paris. It ended the Us military involvment in Vietnam. The Vietnamese war was vey unpopular in the US. The South Vietnam military was left responsable for the war and the US troop leave on March 29th.

Voting Rights Act Extended
In 1975 the original voting right act was extended in section 5. It was added so that voting rights violations would not occur. This section focused on tests or devices that existed to discourge certain individuals from voting.

Vietnam War Major Events:Fall of Saigon
IN 1975 the capitol of Vietnam was invaded by the communist troops of North Vietnam and it marked the fall of saigon. South Vietnam fell to communism and the war ended. The US wasn't invloved at this point anymore.

The Education for All Act was to be put in motion on september 1at 1978 but was signed in 1975. It is the most important piece of legislation regaurding special education. It states that redaurgless of ability all children are gaurtenteed a free public education.It also guarentees induvidualized education for each student with disabilaties.
