Vietnam split into two, north vietnam and south Vietnam. Vietnam divided along the 17th parallel which became nation wide. -
First American deaths
Two military advisors are killed by Viet Minh guerilla soldiers in a raid at Bien Hoa in South Vietnam. These are the first American deaths (non-combat) reported in Vietnam. -
National Liberation Front Organized in South Vietnam
The National Liberation Front for South Vietnam was formed. With this, Vietcong was also formed. -
South Vietnamese Protests
South Vietnamese police fire shots into a crowd of Buddhist monks demonstrating against President Diem's regime. The event inspired others to protest. -
Diems death
Diems death brought more chaos to south Vietnam which caused Vietcong influence to grow. -
Attack on the USS Maddox
North Vietnamese patrol boat fired at the American destroyer. That led to President Johnson to launch bombs strikes on North Vietnam. -
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
The U.S. Congress passes the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which gives President Lyndon Johnson the power to take whatever actions he sees necessary to defend South Vietnam against Viet Cong forces. -
Penalties for Draft-Dodging
The U.S. Congress passed an amendment to the Selective Service, the Act criminalized the destruction of draft cards. Men who dodge draft pay a fine and get sent to prison. That caused a lot of riots. -
Tet Offensive
Beginning on the Vietnamese Tet holiday, Viet Cong forces shocked U.S. troops with a wave of attacks supported by North Vietnamese troops. The caused a serious blow for the United States. It also decreased public support by a lot. -
Saigon Falls
The North Vietnamese took Saigon; the war in Vietnam ended.
