American soldiers opened fire and killed a large number of innocent civilians in My Lai (in South Vietnam). Around 300-500 were dead by the end. -

Johnson drops out of the presidential race very early in the year. He dropped out because of how many upset Americans there were about the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. -
Protests at the Democratic Convention
At the Democratic Convention in Chicago, over 10,000 protesters were outside demanding antiwar. Police sprayed and beat protesters, all which was broadcasted on television. -
Vietnamization Introduced
President Nixon introduced his new plan of Vietnamization during his televised speech. The plan involved gradually withdrawing U.S. troops from the war so that more and more fighting would be turned over to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. -
Fall of Saigon
North Vietnam came down and captured Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam. This lead to Vietnam becoming one communist country.
