  • Domino theory coined

    President Eisenhower used the domino effect to escalate the war between the U.S. and Vietnam. He didn’t want Vietnam becoming a communist party.
  • Geneva Accords

    Documents signed by several countries, attempting to reach peace with Vietnam. France agreed to take their troops out of Vietnam.
  • Assassination of Diem

    The president of South Vietnam is assassinated by a group of people.
  • Gulf of Tonkin resolution

    Congress gives President Johnson the power to do whatever is necessary to keep peace in southeastern Asia.
  • LBJ sends the first troops into Vietnam

    This was a response to forming tension, and started the bloodshed between the countries.
  • Tet Offensive

    North Vietnam attacked North Vietnam and U.S. troops. This was one of the biggest escalators in the whole war.
  • My Lai Massacre

    U.S. troops cross into the My Lai village and killed almost all the (unarmed) villagers. This only increased war tensions.
  • Vietnamization policy

    Nixon attempts to train and provide weapons for South Vietnam in order to fight North Vietnam. He tries to scare the North Vietnamese, by bombing rural and poor areas too.
  • Troops sent to Cambodia

    President Nixon sends the first troops into Cambodia.
  • Kent State shooting

    College students attending Kent State College protest bombings in Cambodia, so the Ohio National Gaurdsmen shot them. They killed 4, and injured 9.
  • Hard Hat Riot

    A group of construction workers break up anti-war protest. This puts more strain on the relationship between U.S. veterans and citizens.
  • Nixon Christmas bombing

    Nixon bombed Vietnam from 12/18/72 through 12/29/72. It was supposed to increase war tension, and it definitely worked.
  • Paris Peace Accords

    North Vietnam, South Vietnam, and the U.S. met in Paris to sign documents. It was made to restore peace between Vietnam and the U.S.
  • Fall of Saigon

    The capital of South Vietnam, Saigon, fell to the North Vietnam army. This ended the war.
