Geneva Conference
GenevaVietnam was granted it independence. It was also divided at the 17th parallel into North and South Vietnam. North Vietnam would be led by Ho Chi Minh, and the South would be held forces by pro-Western government. Their leader would be Diem. The United States disapproved of the agreement and didn't sign the accord. -
Credibility Gap
It was used to describe public skepticism about the Johnson administration statements polices on Vietnam War.. It was used to handl the escalation of American involvement in the War. It also help to confirm the public suspicion that there was a significant gap between the administrations. -
Diem is overthrown
He was the South's leader that was overthrown because he started to discriminate against Buddhism. He was overthrown by the military and then later killed. -
Tonkin Resolution
North Vietnamese torpedo boats were alleged to have attacked the United States destroyers that were reporting intelligence information to South Vietnamese. Johnson decided air attacks on the North Vietnamese. Aug 7th congress passed a resolution that let the president take all necessary measures to repel attacks. -
Operation Rolling Thunder
American sustained boming campaign against North Vietnam. During the duration of the operation 643,000 bombs were dropped, but nearly 900 US aricrafts were lost. The damage done to vietnam was nearly $300 million, but it cost the US over $900 million. Rolling Thunder lasted United October 1968 -
Anti-war teach-in
Group of faculty and students at the University of Michigan all came together and discussed the issues surrounding the war and why they opposed of it. By May 122 colleges had held National Teach-Ins. -
Operation Masher
It was a search and destroy mission. Its goal was to drive the North Vietnamese out of the proviene and destroy enemy supplies. By the time the operation had ended there was over 2,385 enemy deaths -
Operation Cedar Falls
The largest American ground operation during the Vietnam war. It was launched to attempt to destory the Iron Triangle because it was Vietcong's stronghold. It was an American success. -
Tet Offensive
Series of suprise attacks on South Vietnam by the Vietcong and North Vietnamese forces. Tet offensive is considered on of the turing points in the Vietnam War. -
Siege Khe Sanh
It was the most remost outpost during Vietnam. The Ho Chi Minh trail had been used as a communications link between North and South since the fighting began between the French and Viet Minh. -
Mi Lai Massacure
The men from the Charlie Company 11th brigade division entered the Vietnamese villiage. As the mission unfolded it generated a massacure of over 300 soliders. Word about massacure did not reach the Americans public until 1969 -
Vietnamization
Created to help the South Vietnamese take more responsibility in fighting the war. Nixion wanted this policy to work so he could slowly start iwth withdraw troops from war. -
Cambodia Invasion
President Nixon announced on televison broadcast that the American troops were going to invade Cambodia because North Vietnamese were supporting the South Camboida troops with supplies and that South Vietnam had been planing raids against Camboida for the past year. This announcement struck world wild college campus raids -
Kent State
Ohio National Gaurd soilders fired on demonstrators without an order to do so, because of the Cambodian invasions. They filled four students and wounded nine others. -
Pentagon Papers
They were given to the New York Times and other newspapers, which had revealed the the government had lied about a few operations during Vietnam and this made people want to get out of the War even more and it sent everybody into a big uproar -
26th amendment
Changed the voting law from 21 to 18. The young men who were fighting in the war thought since they could be drafted at the age of 18 that they should be able to choose who sends them to war and who brings them home. -
United States withdrawal of troops
After the peace agreement was signe by the United States and Norht and South Vietnam the US started with drawing most of the troops from Vietnam and also the US prisoners of war. Nixon altered tatics and last troops were with drawen two months later. -
War Power Act
Established limits on excutive power. It required the president to inform congress of any commitment of troops abroad within 48 hours, and withdraw then in 60-90 days unless congress explicitly approved the troops commitment -
South Vietnam surr
North Vietnamese army launched a full scale invasion on South Vietnam aftr the peace agreement had failed. North Nietnam captured Saigon the South's capital. Vietnam was then reunited under communist rule after the South had surrended and Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City. -
Vietnam unified
Vietnam was unifed under communist rule. It was unifed to how it looks today day. There was no longer a North and South Vietnam
