    Dien Bien Phu Loss
    Vietminh surrounded Dien Bien Phu and began attack the town with French forces. This was a large defeat and made the French withdraw from the war.

    The Geneva Accords split North and South Vietnam along the 17th parallel. In the north was the communists that defeated the French at Dien Bien Phu. In the south was a new government that Americans began to protect.

    In 1961 Kennedy became the presidents of the United States and he thought the Vietnam war was a vital step to containing communism by defeating the north. Kennedy began to send US enforcements into southern Vietnam.

    In southern Vietnam Diems power was seized and he was executed due to unpopularity. This greatly weakened southern Vietnam.

    Two northern Vietnamese torpedos destroyed American boats at the gulf of Tonkin. This made America begin to respond and take action to any threats caused by North Vietnam increasing tensions.

    After multiple years of battles and fights between North and South Vietnam Nixon became president and wanted to withdraw from the war just as many other Americans did. He started negotiations and made Northern Vietnam stay interested by bombing them during December 1972.
