Assasination of Diem
Diem was anti-Buddhist. He destroyed Buddhist temples and imprisioned and killed many Buddhists. Many Buddhist Monks protested by burning themselves to death in busy public areas. Horrified, the U.S. military assassinated Diem against Kennedy's wishes. -
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
Congress passed this act to let President Johnson do anything to maintain international peace and security in southeast Asia. This allowed President Johnson to use military force to keep peace in southeast asia and fight against communism. -
Operation Rolling Thunder
This was approved by President Johnson on February 13, 1965. It was operated on March 2, 1965. This marked the first act of war on Vietnam by the United States. -
Tet Offensive
70,000 Vietcong and North Vietnamese soldiers launched surprise attacks on the South Vietnamese and the Americans. This gave the advantage to the North while people who saw this by the news lost support for the war. The United states lost quite a few Hawks because of this. -
My Lai Massacre
American soldiers fired and killed 300 to 500 women and children in the small village of My Lai. This event was kept away from the public until November in 1969. 300-500 Vietnamese were killed. -
Invasion of Cambodia
The invasion was operated to defeat Vietcong and Viet Minh forces attacking from neutral Cambodia. The Northern Vietminh/Vietcong were using Cambodian territory to attack South Vietnam. -
Kent State Massacre
Many students were protesting the expansion of the Vietnam War. The Ohio national guard fired on a group of kids, killing 4 and wounding 9.
