LBJ over simplified a small attack on U.S. forces and gets the vote from congress to escalate U.S. involvement in Vietnam. -
1965
Over 80,000 U.S. ccombat troops are in South Vietnam -
1968
Enemies use tet new year to launch suprise attack on U.S. and South Vietnamese forces. -
1968-1969
Presidential election. Richad Nixon becomes 37th president. -
1970-1971
Invasion of Cambodia in 1970 and the leak of pentagon papers in 1971 made war in Vietnam more and more unpopular among American people. -
1973
Paris Peace Accords were signed to restore peace and end direct U.S. military involvment in Vietnam. -
1975
Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam decided to liberate South Vietnam.
