    VIETNAM WARThou the war had started in 1954, conflict in the Vietnamese area had stretched back into the mid 1940’s. The war began after Ho Chi Minh and his communist party rose to power in North Vietnam. During this time the Cold War was still intensifying. The United States and president Dwight D. Eisenhower, being totally against communism, pledged their firm support to Diem and South Vietnam. More than 3 million people were killed in the Vientam War, including 58,000 Americans.

Thirteen Americans working for the U.S. Information Service were wounded in terrorist bombings in Saigon. The rise of the Guerrillas activity in South Vietnam was causing problems. They assassinated 75 South Vietnamese officials in 1957 and more than 400 total.

    Slide 16: Advisory Effort in Vietnam The American and South Vietnamese ally was so unpopular, Buddhist monks were calmly willing to set fire to themselves to protest the South Vietnam government. These Buddhist were not attempting to kill anyone else of inflict danger to anyone, but they use the taking of their own lives to make a political statement. Americans did not stop and think about the meaning behind this practice.

    THE EVENTS:After President Diem and President Kennedy meet, because of the conditions of South Vietnam, the United States agreed to increase the amount of American soldiers in Vietnam. Kennedy was fully supportive of Diem and South Vietnam. Troops in South Vietnam went from less than 400 to 900 and soon would reach around 9,000 troops in Vietnam.

This assasination started one of the biggest conspiracy theories known today. In Lyndon's quest to be the next Franklin D Roosevelt and to be remembered for domestic activism, will end up being destroyed by the Vietnam War. Lyndon Johnson took ownership of this was and conflict and eswcalated the whole conflics like no one else.

He knew that South Vietnam would not be able to survive long without the help of America. He also knew it was clear that just sending money and US military advisors was not making an impact. Johnson soon did send over more troops into South Vietnam.

    Slide 25: LBJ & the Vietnam WarPresident Johnson was known for wearing his heart on his sleeve when it came to the Vietnam War. He was known for crying or sobbing because of the war. The problem for LBJ was that he did not want to fight this war to win. He was worried war would be declared on America if he did not do what he was doing. He was fighting the war not to lose, instead of fighting to win. He wanted to teach the anti-communist allies how to survive and then take american troops out of Vietnam.

    Slide 22: Shocks to Political System in 1968Rodert Kennedy, who was running for president, was a great democratic candidate, really connected with the poor, the African Americans, and with other minorities. Right after wining the California Primary, he was assasinated. Another major reform voice who has also been assasinated only a couple months apart from Robert Kennedy was MLK. This was a lot to handle for Americans and to keep their faith in making the country whole.

    The Battle for Hue, Vietnam, 1968The Battle for Hue was different than most the battles fought during the Vietnam War. The battle lasted for 26 days as the US and South Vietnamese forces try to recapture the site seized by the Communists during the Tet Offensive. Hue was a religious site; leveled by battle. This was a US victory. Approximately 2,800 people were killed and mass graves of people who were executed prior to the battle were discovered.

    Slide 26: Tet Offensive- 19681968 really marked the beginning of the end for President Johnson when it came to the Vietnam War. American's enemies in Vietnam used the occasion of the Tet New Year to launch a suprise attack agains the US and South Vietnamese fources. A war that was once faught on the country side has now moved battle into the cities. Even though the Tet Offensive was considered as US victory, it was a political disaster for the US.

    Nixon’s Secret Bombing of CambodiaIn an effort to destroy Communist supply routes and base camps in Cambodia, Presidents Nixon Okayed his secret bombing plan called “Operation Breakfast”. American troops withdraw. Cambodia was defenseless and neutral at this time. The bombing was conducted without knowledge of Congress or the American public. The illegal bombing continued from March 1969 to August of 1973. An estimation of half a million Cambodian citizens died.

NIXONAfter being charged by the Democratic presidential candidates saying that he is not moving fast enough to end US involvement in Vietnam, President Nixon introduced a strategy known as Vietnamization. This strategy gradually withdrew American troops but also trained South Vietnamese army forces how to defend themselves. The troops strength was reduced by seventy thousand.

When Nixon announced the war was ending, it happened very premature because the war continued for two more years. The Vietnam war basically divided the nation and changed how military would be ran in American.
