Lunch Counter Sit-Ins
4 students sat at a segregated lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina. Students were called names, beaten, spat on, food poured on them, and arrested. However they kept fighting. They continued to sit at counters. -
Freedom Riders
The goal was to intergrate bus services. In Birmingham, Alabama freedom riders were pulled from the bus by the police and members of the KKK, and beaten.In Montgomery the blacks were supposed to be protected yet a mob of of KKK members beat up passangers (which the police allowed.) -
Birmingham Campaign
MLK lead a peaceful protest in Alabama. He was trying to get the president's attention. Which he did- millions watched the protest on tv. He was in the city most known for segregation, after 8 days MLK was arrested. Protests continued and police got violents and arrested 600. -
March on Washington
MLK delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Around 250,000 demonstrators showed up to support civil rights. -
Civil RIghts Act
Banned discrimination in the workplace on the basis of race, religion, sex, or national origin. Made segregation illegal. -
Lyndon B Johnson
On March 31, 1968 Lyndon B Johnson (LBJ) withdrew from the presidential election. He was unliked due to his involvment in the Vietnam War. -
Assassination of Martin Luther King
Was shot on the second level balcony in a motel in Tennessee. Due to his assassination there was riots in over 100 cities.
