  • Geneva Accords

    Diplomats from the United States, France, Great Britain, The Soviet Union, China and Vietnam met in Geneva, Switzerland to work out a peace agreement. Vietnam would be divided into North Vietnam and South Vietnam for a while. The US would support the South.
  • The Vietnam War Begins

    Civil war in Vietnam begins when leader Ngo Dinh Diern refused to hold re-elections. Many supported Ho Chi Minh who was communist. The country divided into 2 and nobody knew who was friend or foe.
  • Gulf Of Tonkin

    President Johnson wanted to be more involved in the Vietnam conflict. North Vietnames patrol boats attacked American Destroyers. Congress passed a resolution that gave johnson more authority to use American forces in Vietnam.
  • USS Pueblo

    North Korean boats captured the USS Pueblo which was an American navy spy ship. The Next week North Vietnam did a bunch of attacks in South Vietnam.
  • TET Offensive

    The North Vietnamese and Vietcong coordinated attacks all over South Vietnam which targeted American military bases and major South Vietnam cities. The attacks began on the Vietnamese new year called Tet. It was a long battle and the Americans and South Vietnames won.
  • Richard Nixon Wins Presidency

    Nixon earned 301 electorall votes versus 191 votes for Humphrey. He only got 43.4% of the peoples votes. People wanted to restore "Law and Order" and that is why Nixon and Wallace together had the support of 57% of American voters.
  • Nixon sends troops to Cambodia

    Civil war started in Cambodia between communists and non-communist forces. Nixon decided to destroy communist bases using American troops. Congress and others thought he overstepped his authority.
  • Six students killed at Universities

    At Kent State, many students gathered to protest the war. National guard arrived but students wouldn't stop. They killed 4 students and injured 9. A similar situation occured at Jackson State. 2 protestors were killed.
  • Paris Peace Accords end U.S Involvement in Vietnam

    The North Vietnamese agreed to peace talks after heavy air attacks by the U.S. South Vietnam agreed to accept peace terms after pressure from the U.S. America pulled out all U.S. forces and they had their P.O.W.'s returned. It did not end the war, just America's involvement.
  • Vietnam War Ends

    The Communist took over Saigon and then South Vietnam was forced to surrender. Many Vietnamese citizens who had supported the U.S. tried to flee to America. Many however, could not escape. The war was finally over.
